Naturally cool water from the Croton Reservoir was piped in to the city morgue and sprayed in a constant stream over the bodies to keep them cool in the pre-refrigeration era. The deceaseds' personal effects were kept near their bodies to aid in identification. Then as now, the morgue's dead room was used to make the bodies of Jane and John Does available for possible identification and for investigation of the cause of death of suspected crime victims.
